Choosing a Small-Block Chevy Electric Water Pump
For a Chevrolet Gen I small-block engine, the PROFORM 66225 family is a starting point when choosing an electric water pump. Confirm the engine generation, mounting arrangement and surrounding clearances before choosing a finish. A part described as “small-block Chevy” should not be assumed to fit an LS engine or a different cooling layout.
Which engine does the 66225 pump fit?
PROFORM lists the 66225BK for Chevrolet Gen I small-block 265–400 V8 engines, covering 1958–1987 applications. Use the manufacturer’s application information alongside the actual engine fitted to your vehicle: engine swaps and modified accessory drives can differ from the original vehicle specification.
Compare the finish options
| Manufacturer part | Finish | Product |
|---|---|---|
| 66225BK | Black powder coat | View black electric water pump |
| 66225C | Chrome | View chrome electric water pump |
| 66225P | Polished | View polished electric water pump |
For the 66225BK, the manufacturer specifies a 12-volt motor, a six-amp draw, 35 GPM flow and an included 1.75-inch hose attachment. Flow rating alone does not establish whether an entire cooling system will suit a particular engine or use.
What should I check before ordering?
- Engine identification: confirm the engine family and generation, rather than relying only on the vehicle’s model year.
- Physical fit: compare pump position, mounting faces, radiator distance and accessory brackets against the manufacturer’s dimensions.
- Hose route: check the inlet connection, lower radiator hose and clearance around belts and chassis components.
- Electrical supply: plan the connection and circuit protection using the instructions for the exact pump.
- Complete cooling system: review radiator capacity, fan airflow and the intended operating conditions with your installer.
Does the electric pump replace the mechanical pump’s belt drive?
The pump motor is electrically driven. Before removing a mechanical pump, check how the existing belts, pulleys and brackets support the rest of your accessory drive. Do not assume those parts can remain in their original arrangement.
Where are the fitting instructions?
Open the manufacturer’s 66225BK page and select Instructions for the fitting document. Use the instructions supplied with your exact pump for mounting, hose installation, wiring and filling. The manufacturer warns against running the pump dry.
Shop Radiator Systems & Components or read the manufacturer’s 66225BK specification.
